Hey, did your dog lay a golden egg yet?

that's the question i'm going to ask my brother and his wife.
you see several months ago we went to england for my niece's wedding.
the reception afterwards was a lovely outdoorsy event and a good time was had by all.
when i was in the taxi on the way home i went to twiddle my wedding band on my little finger, which is my habit, and with a heart stopping shock i realized that it was gone!!
i should explain, my wedding band was worn on the little finger of my right hand for these last few years. over the years i think it shrunk (!) and it didn't fit my finger anymore.
so i started wearing a bigger wedding band and because i couldn't not wear my 'real' one i just transferred it to my right hand.
it was more noticeable to me on my right hand too.
once that ring graduated to my right little finger i noticed it all the time.
i twirled it constantly.
when i needed to think, i turned it around and around.
so imagine my shock when i realized it was GONE!

truth be told it was getting a bit too big and it had fallen off a couple of times but i'd always caught it.
i thought i was very careful.
when i wasn't twiddling it, my thumb grazed it every few seconds to check it was still there.
i'm still doing that now, six months later.
it's like a phantom leg that's been amputated.

i was absolutely devastated.
last year we were married 40 years.
that wedding ring cost 10 guineas 40 years ago.
guineas?
a guinea was worth one pound and one shilling in 1971 (way before YOU were born) and before decimalisation.
it didn't matter how much it cost and i've always suspected that i wasn't its first owner either.
inscribed inside the band was the word "Lucky".
i never knew why that was there or who put it there and it took me a few years to notice it.
when i did, i was baffled that i'd not noticed it before.
i'd always thought it just appeared out of nowhere at some point.
but wasn't that a good omen?
apparently only for 40 years.
and then my luck ran out.

my brother and his wife had some people go over the field with a metal detector once i'd discovered my loss after the wedding.
i went up when the crew came to take down the marquee and i personally went through the bins and looked in the trailers that housed the toilets.
i went through the rubbish bags and that wasn't pretty.
but
i didn't find it.

so back to the dogs.
my brother and his wife have two lovely labradors.
they will eat ANYTHING.
but only if they're not supposed to.
my only hope is that one of them will snuffle through the grass one day, find it and eat it.
then they'll lay a golden egg.

what're the chances do you think?

it was a VERY big field and i think we combed every inch

many things got left behind that day
i wonder if i dropped it in one of those haybales?
too late now, probably got eaten by the horse in the next field later on that week.
hmm, wonder if HE laid a golden egg?

So you're suggesting that every poop that comes out has to be inspected?

Clippy Mat said...

EPMum: no I'm not SUGGESTING it. i'm bloody well saying that's the least a brother could do for a sister. no?
;-)

Oh, Clippy, I'm so sorry about your ring.

And, yes, I'm TOTALLY with you! Your brother should have been inspecting every single nugget that left those dogs bottoms!!

Cheech: i thought you'd agree with me. ;-)

This makes me so sad....I hate it when something meaningful is lost! I don't think your luck has run out yet Clippy, you and the other half are still going strong!
Golden eggs? My dogs just leave poop in the yard; lame.

Rotten thing to have happened.
Mr Fly lost his wedding ring while gardening...we went over every inch with a metal detector but all we found were the rusty wires clipped from the vines that used to grow there.

I hope you find your ring. I can't even imagine how heartbroken you must be. I'll say a prayer to St. Anthony for you. :-)

Suz: i know. i hate it too. but on the upside, it's true we're still going strong.

Fly: perhaps it's lying there even now..... and maybe someone else will discover it....

ETW: hi! long time no see. thanks for the prayer. i do believe the st. anthony thing so if you could have a word that would be really nice

:-)

I hadn't realised you were back in the land of blogging. Just seen your last post; have you tidied up now?

Talking of wedding rings, my beloved husband lost his on our honeymoon. Must have been too big for him as it disappeared down the plughole of the shower in hotel and, despite a little man with a wire, was never seen again.

Clipstress, I lost my first wedding ring the first week I was home after the birth of my son...

Suffering from a little dermatitis in those days, I took it off in the bathroom absentmindedly while running a bath, and seeing to a colicky, fretful babe.

I never got to put it back on again. I left instructions to the new owner of the house when we moved, in case it ever turned up.

I replaced it, but I never actually replaced it, if you know what I mean? It had apple blossom leaves engraved around it, and a pink tinge to the gold. I had my new ring engraved in a similar style, but it wasn't the same.

There may be hope for you - A friend of mine found hers in her garden after losing it some twenty years before...

Get your brother to keep going out over the fields with the metal detector, and the dogs.

Thinking of you!

Mark:
Thank you. (it remains to be seen if it 'sticks').

Fhina:
Sorry about your wedding ring too but after reading that... who knows!I can't resign myself to never seeing it again. Wonder if yours will turn up?

my ring has shrunk, so much so that I am going to have to have it cut off before I have my hand operated it.

It does suck that you lost your ring. You never know it may turn up yet.....

The wedding venue looked fab! I'm sure your brother will be looking for nuggets for a while :-)

Perhaps your ring had once belonged to another lucky lady who'd worn it for 40yrs of marriage before she too lost it? Maybe your 'Lucky' ring has an eternal mission & will soon be looking after another lovely lady at the begining of her marriage?
Little compensation for you I know, but makes for a lovely story :)
